Veselka is one of those cool and hip East Village hangouts that movies try to imitate. This might seem weird since the food is described as "Ukrainian soulfood". When I lived in NYC for the summer last year, going to Veselka was a saturday mornign ritual. My roommate and I would walk the 10 blocks to treat ourselves to all the amazing breakfast varieties.
Although they do boast a huge menu of Ukrainian delicacies such as borscht, pierogis and stuffed cabbage, they also have amazing traditional breakfasts as well. During the summertime, there is an outdoor seating area that is perfect for people watching. Another important detail is that Veselka is opened 24 hours a day. This may not be rare in the city that never sleeps but it is nonetheless an amazing attribute. There is nothing better than being hungry at 3 am and knowing a tasty treat is just down the street!
